Picture taken April 15, 2019. REUTERS/Sarah Marsh. Far from that recurrent national temptation, which is the tradition of the visual epic, of the implicit recourse to History with a capital letter, and of the frigid pictorialism of the cabinet, as well as of the already abusive thematic exploitation of the insularity or its symbols, to Leandro Feal Bonachea has had a handful of exhibitions to be among the most outstanding photographers of his generation .
Photographer of the body and its policies, always moving through streets, bars, discotheques or quarters for rent, the look of Feal seems to document, more incisively than that of any other current Cuban artist, the transit of certain subjects from one area to another , the intimate coexistence between compromised and diverse worlds. Because what your camera captures is participation in a community through image. A somewhat Ukrainian community, or one to come, transnational and post-communist, whose single representation goes against the current of that incessant generalization of icons that may be, after all, the most explicitly political of all public activities aimed at the control of the sensible. And it is this engagement of the artist and his models, that lasting or momentary intimacy, which contributes a furtive and irresistible character to those photos taken no matter where; images that have no fidelity other than participation in the solitude or pleasure of those photographed, nor any other justification than the ecstasy of the record.
