Justin Craun (American, b.1982), originally from Bethesda, Maryland., and a 2004 graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, is a young artist living and working in Brooklyn. A noteworthy player in the Contemporary Art world in New York, Craun depicts modern subjects with a sarcastic and haunting realism that can, at times, parallel Picasso’s primitivism. His recent series of portraits, including Onlooker (2012), portray young women from fashion blogs posing against graphic, abstract compositions, hyperbolized by serrated surfaces and hallucinatory colors replacing what were once urban street corners.
