Underworld characters with unexpected vulnerability and humor

Kim Won Geun. Both figurative and stylized, Kim Won Geun's sculptures depict a world of violence inspired by the Eastern Asian mafias.
The sculptures of Kim Won Geun depict underworld characters with unexpected vulnerability and humor. Often crafted in wood or epoxy resin and acrylics, these works range in size, yet have garnered fans across art fairs in handheld heights. The artist’s work recently turned heads at CONTEXT Art Miami in December. “Kim Won Geun’s figurative sculptures are depicting a world of violence with a comical sense of distance to a masculine identity obviously inspired by the Eastern Asian mafias,” Nil Gallery says. [The] Seoul Boxing Club [series] by Kim Won Geun is compressing different situations: money collecting, boxing games, gambling, prostitution. A close study of the cultural conventions of the mob always with humour and irony.”
